Description

Also known as the Mullen Mouth bit, this was very traditional for harness horses as it provided nice contact with the reins and was considered a bit more aggressive as it rested heavily on the horse’s tongue without relief, often causing the horse to be more animated with their mouths in order to find a more comfortable place for the bit to lay.

It did not have as much leverage as the jointed bits, who often pinched the horse's tongues and jabbed the roof of their mouths, and was most likely used in conjunction with a smaller, jointed bit and 2 sets of reins. Iron is nicely pocked and rusted, hand forged details show the skill of the blacksmith in that era. Circa 1900s, bit measures 12 1/2 inches total length, 5 1/2 inch mouthpiece and 3 inch loose rings.
