Description

This fabulous button most-likely adorned the tweed jacket of the Victorian hunter, as buttons like this were in high vogue at the turn of the century for both men and women’s apparel. Celluloid is a natural compound of cellulose treated with nitric acid, and the polymerization created a material that was useful in many forms and particularly for durable fashion buttons.

Repurposed into a lovely and versatile piece of jewelry, braided and smooth leather cords can be wrapped for bracelet, doubled for a short focal necklace or dropped full length for a longer, sweater style pendant. Leather cord with toggle clasp in brass. Button is circa 1880s.

Adjustable 8 to 18 to 36 inches, button measures 15/16 inches round.

How this defines the urban equestrian: Outdoor sports were a huge pastime at the turn of the century, and every huntsman had a horse and hound; a lovely repurposed piece of jewelry to celebrate the sporting past of the equine.
