This Saddle Seat saddle is also known as a cutback saddle due to the cutback pommel (front) which is set back to allow for the higher wither and neck set of the Saddle horse. This type of English Saddle sets the rider slightly “behind the motion” of the horse, thought to better influence the horse’s head set and gaits.

The origins of Saddle Seat riding developed on the plantations of the south where smooth-gaited horses were required for hours of riding while overseeing the vast properties; but the owners also required an impressive, high-stepping horse for riding in town, and it became the tradition of riders to show off their flashiest, highest-stepping horses by riding them in city parks on Sundays – hence the Park Horse was deemed. The Lane Fox has grown to define the type of saddle, although the origins of the Lane Fox are simply with an English brand. Barnsby Saddlery was founded in 1793 in Walsall, England; sadly, this company who survived over 200 years in business officially closed its doors in 2014 due to a failed restructure attempt.

This is a lovely saddle in complete working condition; pig hide leather with the traditional flat seat, minimal flocking and short billets. There are some stains on the seat most likely due to over-oiling, but the leather remains soft and supple. Seat size is 20 inches and tree size is wide. Circa 1970s.
